RACE DETAILS:
The Last Runner Standing is a unique event for runners of all abilities, but only the strongest among them will be the LAST RUNNER STANDING. The race will be begin at 12:00 p.m. and each runner will have exactly one hour to complete the 4.2 mile loop course. If a runner fails to return within the hour, they are eliminated from the race. Runners can complete the course at whatever pace they choose, but they MUST finish the race and be at the starting line to start the next race within 60 minutes. A new 4.2 mile race will begin every hour on the hour (12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and so on…) until only one runner is left standing. If a runner fails to make it to the start line at the top of the hour before the gate is closed, that runner is eliminated. What will your strategy be? Will you run the loop hard and reserve time for rest, or take your time, conserve your energy on the trail and only take a few minutes to rest before the next race begins? This race may not favor the speedster, but the runner who is slow and steady.
The LAST RUNNER STANDING provides a great opportunity to challenge yourself in a unique event unlike others you may have participated in before. It's also a great opportunity to get in a long training run with support, cover a marathon or 50 mile or even, if you have what it takes.....be the LAST RUNNER STANDING.
CUTOFFS:
There are no cutoffs! Race will continue until there is only one LAST RUNNER STANDING!
LAST RUNNER STARTING Race Details:
The Last Runner Starting is an age graded race with staggered starts depending on your age. Like the famous Dipsea Race in California, we will place you in a starting position based on your age. We will utilize The Dipsea's headstart times based on years of historical data from previous Dipsea races. Once you register you will be given a starting time determining your headstart time over the "scratch" runners, the LAST RUNNERS to start. Starting at 9:00 a.m., runners will start every minute until the "scratch" runners start 25 minutes later. If everything is timed right, runners should be coming together for an immensely exciting and chaotic finish! Passing runners ahead of you will be a challenge and you'll have to be strategic where and when you pass. This race will be fast, fun and exciting with just about anyone having a shot at winning! Join us and see if you can hold off the LAST RUNNERS STARTING!

Start/Finish Line Area:
SATURDAY June 10, 2023
AID STATIONS/DROP BAGS:
The race headquarters tent will provide typical ultra snacks and drinks and warm food and soup as the day turns to evening. Along with race results, headquarters will provide a chance to mingle and share stories from the trail with your running friends and also a chance to catch up on rest between races. Runners will have access to aid after each 4.2 mile race.
At the start/finish are there will be a "Runners Village". You may set up a tent or canopy for your runner and crew. Please keep your total footprint to 10'x10' so there is room for everyone's crew and tent.
DROP BAGS:
Drop bags may be left in the race headquarters tent, at your crew site, or in your vehicle at the Start/Finish area
CREWS:
You may have a crew assist you after each race at the Start/Finish HQ Aid Station. Crews may only assist runners at the Start/Finish line aid station. Runners may not receive assistance from outside crews anywhere else on the course. You may use a 10’x10’ footprint for your Runner Village camp set up. Please keep your footprint to this size so we can accommodate all runners. Each runners camp should be 6 feet from the next group to maintain physical distancing.
THE COURSE:
The race is Classic Duluth! A scenic loop including very runnable stretches, singletrack climbing along lovely Kingsbury creek and its many waterfalls, and a traverse across the slope of Spirit Mountain providing tremendous views of the City of Duluth, Lake Superior and its harbor and the St. Louis River. Even though you may complete multiple 4.2 mile races, you won’t tire of this scenic course. Carefully review the COURSE DESCRIPTION HERE.
COURSE MARKING: The course will be marked well at all intersections. The course is essentially self contained within the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area so road crossings will be minimal. The trail will be marked with pink flagging and we will have flagging with reflective tape for those pushing on into the night. Trail markers will be CLIPS pinned to trees, bushes, posts, etc. Some pin flags in the ground may also mark the course where trees or bushes aren't available. We will have arrows at some of the turns and intersections.
